In celebration of AmeriCorps Week, we sat down for a quick Q&A to get to know our newest service member, Jessi Tobin.

Why did you decide to join AmeriCorps?

I think it would be more accurate to say that AmeriCorps found me. My church did a build with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando at a time when I was searching desperately for a job. I happened to start a conversation with the Volunteer Manager at the site, one thing led to another and next thing I knew I had an interview with the team at Habitat Greater Orlando. Together with AmeriCorps, impactful changes are being made in our area, and that’s a daily inspiration for me.

What are you looking forward to at Habitat?

As intimidating as it is, I’m most looking forward to having a hand in redesigning the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. I came in at a very exciting, transitional time here at Habitat of Greater Orlando, and I find that to be exhilarating because it allows me room to be creative in a variety of ways.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I read Harry Potter probably once per year. As in all seven books. Actually, the fact that I’m a Harry Potter Super Nerd is known pretty widely among my friends, so maybe that doesn’t accurately answer your question ;).

What’s your favorite motivational quote?

“Chill or get out.”- My friend who is currently extremely pregnant.

I want that quote on my welcome mat.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

Pretty much anything to do with music. My friends and I have what we call “Bad Music Night,” where we all get together and trade instruments and just see what happens. I learned guitar that way! Also, swing dancing.

What’s a fun fact that you’d like to share?

I went white water rafting on the Nile River when I lived in Uganda. It was crazy.

Help us in giving Jessi a huge welcome. We’re glad to have you on the team!
