Every helping hand makes a difference in what we do at Habitat Greater Orlando. That’s why we’re so excited to have a number of interns spending their summer with us to both learn about affordable housing and gain experience in their respective area of study. Throughout the month of July, we’ll introduce you to each one of these amazing individuals! We first sat down with Maya, who’s an advertising and public relations major supporting our Marketing Communications Department.

Why did you decide to intern with Habitat Greater Orlando?

I was really interested in gaining experience with a nonprofit organization. I’ve always enjoyed volunteering and helping people in need, so I wanted to get a taste of what it’s like to work in an office that does just that.

What are you looking forward to most?

I’m looking forward to seeing exactly how a nonprofit runs and how I can add to it. I want to be able to leave this internship with more knowledge on nonprofit organizations, and the skills used to maintain them.

You mentioned you volunteered before, what is your favorite memory about that time?

My favorite memory of volunteering would have to be Relay for Life. I started volunteering at Relay when I was in middle school, but unfortunately had to stop when I left for college.

Every year, my community, friends and family would come together for one night to fundraise for the American Cancer Society. To raise money, we would participate in Just Dance competitions, karaoke, cupcake eating contests, beauty pageants where males would dress like females, and so much more. It was a blast! I miss being able to participate.

What’s your favorite motivational quote?

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

What are your hobbies?

I like to work on intricate crafty projects. I love to put together cool gifts for friends, and it’s interesting to see if I can make what I imagine come to life!
