Future homeowner Modline and her 8-year-old daughter, Daniella, spent the last year searching for a stable place to live. Currently, they’re living in a one-bedroom apartment.
Most of Daniella’s toys are in storage. There’s simply no room in the small home for all of them, including a Baby Alive doll named Emily that Daniella has been asking to see.
Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County’s homeownership program feels like a chance for stability for them, Modline said.
Modline’s home will be constructed during the 2020 Builders Blitz, by Walker & Co., one of six local builders who will each construct a home within five days during the event.
Thanks to help from her mother, Modline was able to make time for Habitat’s homeownership requirements of sweat equity and homeownership classes in addition to her full-time job as a family advocate.
“My daughter is my motivation throughout this,” Modline said. “On weekends, she would wake me up and ask if I was going to complete my hours.”
Modline hopes her own journey will inspire a similar work ethic in Daniella.
“I’m hoping that she will remember the hardwork and sacrifice I made to get our house,” Modline said.
Habitat’s homeownership program gave her knowledge – especially on home upkeep – that she wouldn’t have gained through a more traditional route. Modline has also gotten the opportunity to meet her future neighbors.
“I feel like I’ve gained relationships with other people in the program,” Modline said. “I don’t think I would’ve gotten that without Habitat.”
Before Habitat Orlando & Osceola, Modline’s future felt uncertain. She experienced Central Florida’s housing shortage for herself searching for affordable rentals as well as homes for sale.
“In Orlando, there’s a lack of affordable housing,” Modline said. “Habitat is helping with that. Prior to applying and being approved, I didn’t know where I was going to live.”
